Even if the two local heroes have already had to give up in the singles competition, they ensure full stadiums and a good mood in the doubles competition: Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis are together in the round of the last eight pairings at their home Grand Slam tournament. The two friends prevailed in the round of 16 against Ariel Behar (Uruguay) and Gonzalo Escobar (Ecuador) 6:4, 4:6, 6:4.

In the previous round, the two crowd favorites, who were equipped with a wildcard, managed an absolute surprise coup against the top seeded Croatians Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic. In the quarterfinals it is now against the last remaining German in the main competitions of this year's Australian Open edition. Sixth-seeded Tim Pütz and Michael Venus (New Zealand) benefited from one where their round of 16 rivals Jason Kubler and Christopher O'Connell (both Australia).

The last Australian pairing to win a title was in 1997 when legends Todd Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde defeated Sebastien Lareau (Canada) and Alex O'Brien (USA). The Australian John Peers, who was able to win alongside the Finn Henri Kontinen against the Americans Bob and Mike Bryan in 2017, was recently involved in a double triumph.
