Alexander Erler and Lucas Miedler start against a seeded pair

It has been said that during the Australian Open all four seasons can be experienced in just one day. On Wednesday there were the harbingers of a rainy autumn, which at least made it impossible to hold most of the doubles matches. Which isn't too bad. There's still enough time.

But what gives us the opportunity to take a closer look at the tableau of pair runners. From an Austrian point of view, three players will take part in the first major of 2023. First there is the Davis Cup doubles Alexander Erler and Lucas Miedler. The two Vienna champions from last autumn will start against the number ten of the tournament: Rohan Bopanna and Matthew Ebden. Philipp Oswald tries alongside Argentinian Guillermo Duran. And starts against the two Australians Max Purcell and Jordan Thompson.

The field of participants is led by Wesley Koolhof and Neal Skupski, the best doubles team of the past year. The ATP world champions and US Open champions of 2022, Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram, start as number two. As is well known, the defending champions are not there: Nick Kyrgios had to cancel due to a knee injury. Almost twelve months ago, Kyrgios surprisingly won the title together with Thanasi Kokkinakis.

Interesting, by the way: Of the absolute top players, only Stefanos Tsitsipas also named for the double. Competing with brother Petros, the Greek will start against Ramkumar Ramanathan and Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela.
