He had been given a good tournament in Melbourne after his strong previous year - now Denis Shapovalov has to pack his bags after Round 1. The 20-year-old lost to the Hungarian Marton Fucsovics with 3: 6, 7: 6 (7), 1: 6 and 6: 7 (3).

Shapovalov seemed to be back in the game after winning the second round, especially after showing unusual patience in a long rally in the tie break 6: 7 and avoiding a 0: 2 set deficit at first. In sentence 3, however, little went together, Shapovalov is very frustrated. In the tie break of the fourth round, Fucsovics scored the decisive points with soulful passing balls in the 2: 2, Shapovalov finally hammered a forehand to lose the match.

The world rankings-67. Fucsovics now meets the Italian shooting star Jannik Sinner or Max Purcell, a wildcard player from Australia.
