Actually, the mouths of seasoned tennis fans watered when they looked at the draw, as the chances were not bad that Jannik Sinner and Andy Murray could battle in the third round of the Australian Open. Not so with Taro Daniel, who threw a spanner in the works for the Scot and bought his third-round ticket with a strong performance. And now, instead of Murray, I got Youngster Sinner to deal with.

He showed a solid performance in the first set, transported an early break to an easy 6:3 set win. But then I had to watch how Taro Daniel got better and better into the game, while Sinner himself didn't want to come together at all. The logical consequence: Daniel equalized 6:1 in round two.

But Sinner managed to reset in the third set at exactly the right time, fended off some of Daniel's early chances and made the decisive break late on. The South Tyrolean was able to present again with a 6:3. The preliminary decision in this game: Sinner added the break early in the fourth round and after a little more than two and a half hours made the 6: 4, 1: 6, 6: 3 and 6: 1 success perfect.

In the round of 16, the Italian is now waiting for Alex de Minaur, who clearly won his third-round match with Pablo Andujar in three sets.
