Julia Görges (Bad Oldesloe) missed the round of 16 at the Australian Open. The 31-year-old number 39 in the world rankings was defeated by Alison Riske (USA) at number 18 after a tough struggle with 6: 1, 6: 7 (4: 7), 2: 6. She also missed a duel with her good friend and double partner Ashleigh Barty from Australia.

In their 44 appearances in a Grand Slam tournament so far, Görges had only survived the third round six times - the chance for the seventh time seemed great. But after a furious first sentence, she could no longer maintain the high level against the highly talented 19-year-old Riske. After the hard-fought second set, the American played much safer than Görges and finally transformed her fourth match ball.
