"With everything that's going on, it's the least of my worries," he said on Saturday before the Australia Open (January 20 through February 2) in Melbourne.

The day before, Zverev had asked Australian journalists about Kyrgios that many young players were "simply better" than the 24-year-old from the capital Canberra. Kyrgios is currently number 26 in the world rankings, but Zverev judged that compared to other young players like Stefanos Tsitsipas (Greece) the Australian was "one step back" - while emphasizing that he did not want to understand this negatively.

Kyrgios is amazed at Zverev

"He is a great player. I am not quite sure where these comments come from. I am sure he didn’t mean badly, if I do, then I'm sorry for whatever I did to him," said Kyrgios. During the duel with Zverev in the group game at the ATP Cup in Brisbane, the Australian made fun of the Hamburgian's numerous double faults by provoking him with pushups on the court.

At the same time, Kyrgios emphasized that it was currently hard for him to concentrate on his home grand slam given the aftermath of the bushfires in Australia. "My head isn't complete with tennis right now," he said. Kyrgios had called for donations to be made to those affected soon after the disaster began.
