Matches against Nick Kyrgios have not been blessed with success for Daniil Medvedev so far: in 2019 the Russian lost to Kyrgios both in the final in Washington and on the ashes in Rome. At the Australian Open, this series came to an end on Thursday. Because Medvedev delivered a very appealing performance against Kyrgios, winning 7: 6 (1), 6: 4, 4: 6 and 6: 2.

The second in the world rankings had to fend off six breakballs in set one, but still won the opening act in a tie-break. In the second round, Medvedev acted safely with his own service. Kyrgios had great difficulty reading Medvedev's serves. On the other hand, the favorite forced Kyrgios into longer rallies again and again. The local hero tried to engage the spectators, but Medvedev remained calm. And this time also refrained from any provocations in the direction of the grandstand.
