Australian Open, men, day 1: Rafael Nadal continues - Kyle Edmund slides out

First day at the Australian Open ( see all results here ) - and Rafael Nadal, like Kevin Anderson, is sure to be in the second round. With Kyle Edmund, one of the semi-finalists from the previous year has already left. Andy Murray delivered an epic fight, but was beaten by Roberto Bautista-Agut. An American made up for a 0-2 set gap while three German hopes have already been eliminated. Roger Federer celebrated a smooth three-set victory.

Roger Federer (3 / SUI) - Denis Istomin (UZB) 6: 3, 6: 4, 6: 4

First match under two hours, no chance of break allowed - a confident start made for the defending champion. "Some balls were really good, I'm happy to be healthy," said a humble Federer after winning the first round. Although he still has reserves on serve, the maestro was never in serious danger on Monday evening. Next opponent: Dan Evans.

Roberto Bautista Agut (22 / ESP) - Andy Murray (GBR) 6: 4, 6: 4, 6: 7 (5), 6: 7 (4), 6: 2

By far the most emotional match of the day came to a dramatic end. The visibly battered Murray struggled after a 0: 2 set deficit in a crucial round, but had to admit defeat there. Murray was adopted by all stars of the ATP and WTA tour after his most likely last match at the Australian Open. All information about the game can be found here.

Rafael Nadal (2 / ESP) - James Duckworth (WC / AUS) 6: 4, 6: 3, 7: 5

You don't see that every day: Rafael Nadal doesn't manage to reserve a match. But that's what happened at 5: 4 in the third set against James Duckworth. Nadal lost his serve to zero, but got the decisive break in the twelfth game.

It is not easy to return after a few months, especially against a player with such an aggressive style, "said Nadal during the on-court interview." It was difficult to find a rhythm. I am very happy to be ahead. The old generation, the new, but also the middle generation: everyone wants to win. "

Kevin Anderson (5 / RSA) - Adrian Mannarino (FRA) 6: 3, 5: 7, 6: 2, 6: 1

After a small concentration hole towards the end of the second set, Anderson pulled the match safely on his side. Against an unpredictable Mannarino who was on the seed list last year. Anderson is Rafael Nadal's potential quarter-final opponent.

Tomas Berdych (CZE) - Kyle Edmund (13 / GBR) 6: 3, 6: 0, 7: 5

Impressive start to the season by Tomas Berdych! After moving into the final in Doha, the next Grand Prix match since the French Open is followed by the next sense of achievement. After an hour and 43 minutes he was the winner after an ace and met Robin Haase on lap two. Edmund slips down to around 25th in the ranking, compared to Roger Federer in the semifinals last year.

Marin Cilic (6 / CRO) - Bernard Tomic (AUS) 6: 2, 6: 4, 7: 6 (3)

Solid start of the world ranked seventh in the tournament where he had reached the final last year. Cilic had 24 aces, a total of 56 winners with only 24 unintentional mistakes ensured a clear three-set result. Only in the third set does he have to reproach himself for not serving at 5: 3, but a loose tie-break brought him across the finish line.

Grigor Dimitrov (20 / BUL) - Janko Tipsarevic (PR / SRB) 4: 6, 6: 3, 6: 1, 6: 4

Andre Agassi witnessed his protege's false start in Grigor Dimitrov's box. As the match continued, the semi-finalist from 2017 increasingly took command, also playing out his athletic advantages. Dimitrov meets Pablo Cuevas in round two, who gave Dusan Lajovic no chance.

Stefanos Tsitsipas (14 / GRE) - Matteo Berrettini (ITA) 6: 7 (3), 6: 4, 6: 3 7: 6 (4)

Like so many others, Tsitsipas has to give up the first set in his opening match, but then fights back impressively and wrestles his opponent in four sets. Overall, the Greek struck 40 winners in 49 forced mistakes; he only had to deliver two breaballs, which he did in both cases. Tsitsipas could face Roger Federer in the round of 16.

Diego Schwartzman (18 / ARG) - Rudi Molleker (Q / GER) 6: 1, 6: 3, 4: 6, 6: 0

Molleker was only able to annoy his opponent for a little more than half an hour when he took the third set with a break to 6: 4. While Schwartzman used seven of his nine break chances, Molleker was only able to strike once in three attempts. Still a strong Grand Slam debut for the 18 year old!

Reilly Opelka (USA) - John Isner (9 / USA) 7: 6 (4), 7: 6 (6), 6: 7 (4), 7: 6 (5)

The first seeded player is eliminated! It was the expected serve battle between two men, both taller than two meters. Isner appeared on the comeback course after winning the third set, leading with a break in the fourth round. But Opelka fought back and ensured the greatest victory of his career. Reward: 2nd round against Thomas Fabbiano.

Karen Khachanov (10 / RUS) - Peter Gojowczyk (GER) 6: 3, 3: 6, 6: 4, 6: 3

"Gojo" annoyed the favorite for the first hour, even leading 3-1 after winning the set in the third, before his opponent took his serve four times and he was only able to win four games.

Gael Monfils (30 / FRA) - Damir Dzumhur (BIH) 6: 0, 6: 4, 6: 0

The Frenchman came surprisingly clear to his opening win. After only 1:21 hours, he defeated Dzumhur, who lost his last four matches on the tour. For Monfils, it was the first appearance in 2019 and the first match after leaving the quarter-finals in Vienna. Possible third round opponent: Roger Federer!

Mackenzie McDonald (USA) - Andrey Rublev (RUS) 6: 4, 6: 4, 2: 6, 6: 4

One of the bigger surprises was McDonald, who played big last year. At that time he fought in the second round against Grigor Dimitrov in a fifth set, where he was only defeated 6: 8. A result that would no longer be possible today. Now Bernard Tomic or Marin Cilic is waiting.

Matthew Ebden (AUS) - Jan-Lennard Struff (GER) 1: 6, 6: 4, 6: 3, 6: 4
