Bruno Soares should have a title at the Australian Open 2021 long before the final phase of the first major of the year: in the "Best Mustache" category, the Brazilian double legend is unassailable in the lead. And it's not going badly in terms of sport either: Together with partner Jamie Murray, Soares is already in the semi-finals after a 6: 3 and 6: 4 against Marcelo Arevalo and Matwe Middelkoop. Where, with Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram, the fifth seeded couple is waiting.
In the second half of the 2020 season, there was little to suggest that the successful duo Murray / Soares would show themselves again as such on the ATP tour: Soares won the US Open with Mate Pavic, the other prospects for success were good. But Pavic saw, not for the first time in years, a greener meadow on the other side of the fence. And has been playing with Nikola Mektic since the beginning of the year. Probably also with a view to competing together at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in the summer of this year.
Soares against ex-partner Pavic?
Soares needed a partner - and Jamie Murray, who had played with Neal Skupski last season, raised his hand. Combining mutual success, after all, Murray / Soares won their first Grand Slam title together in Melbourne in 2016. In the same year, the triumph at the US Open in New York City followed. The relationship's revival has already started well: Murray and Soares won one of the preparation tournaments in Melbourne.
Incidentally, a possible final at the Australian Open could be a bit explosive: On the lower branch, Soares' ex-partner Pavic and Nikola Mektic also reached the semifinals after a very good double match against Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut . There they meet Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek.
