World number one Ashleigh Barty has come one step closer to the longed-for home win at the Australian Open. The 24-year-old made it into the round of 16 in Melbourne with a 6: 2, 6: 4 against Russian Ekaterina Alexandrowa on Saturday and continues without losing a set. Since Christine O'Neil's triumph in 1978, the hosts have been waiting for a domestic individual champion. In the men's race, it was two years since the last Australian win (Mark Edmondson 1976).

In the second round, Barty will face the American Shelby Rogers. In the previous year, the 2019 French Open winner skipped most of the season due to the corona pandemic.

Pliskova is subject to Muchova

Co-favorite Elina Svitolina also made it into the round of 16 with ease. The fifth seeded Ukrainian had little trouble in the 6: 4, 6: 0 against Yulia Putintseva (Kazakhstan), the next opponent is the unseeded American Jessica Pegula.

The number six seeded Czech Karolina Pliskova, on the other hand, has to bury her dream of the first Grand Slam title early in the tournament. The former US Open finalist lost the third round match against her compatriot Karolina Muchova 5: 7, 5: 7, in the second set Pliskova gave up a 5: 0 lead. Since the US Open 2019, the former number one in the world has not made it past the third round in a Grand Slam tournament.
