The upper half of the women's tableau is slowly condensing - and a round of 16 duel between defending champion Naomi Osaka and local hero Ashleigh Barty is becoming more and more likely. Barty didn't miss a beat in her second match either, losing only two games against Lucia Bronzetti. Osaka defeated Madison Brengle 6-0, 6-4 in the first game of the night session at Rod Laver Stadium.
Before the two favorites can meet, however, the opponents must first be defeated in round two. Barty meets the dangerous Camila Giorgi. And Osaka will compete with the resurgent Amanda Anisimova from the USA. Anisimova won against Olympic champion Belinda Bencic 6: 2 and 7: 5.
Barbora Krejcikova, who had won against Andrea Petkovic at the start, had no problems. Krejcikova defeated the Chinese Xinyu Wang 6: 2 and 6: 3 and thus made it clear that the French Open winners would meet: In round three, the current Roland Garros title holder will meet Jelena Ostapenko, the 2017 champion.
