Siegemund started well and started with an early break. What Pliskova, who had started the season with the title defense at the excellent occupied tournament in Brisbane, did not get upset. The Czech dominated as usual with her serve, winning the first set 6: 3. And quickly took the lead in round two with a break. In the seventh game, the door to a possible comeback for Siegemund opened a bit, but Pilskova confidently warded off the Germans' ability to break. And served a few minutes later to move into the third round.

There Karolina Pliskova meets either Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova or Taylor Townsend from the USA. The matches on the outer courts could only start later on Thursday, in addition to a few rain showers, sand deposits had spread over the courts overnight.

Belinda Bencic and Garbine Muguruza had previously qualified for the third round: The Swiss defeated Jelena Ostapenko, the French Open winner of 2017, with 7-5 and 7-5. Muguruza prevailed in the Rod Laver Arena after a tough fight with 6: 3, 3: 6 and 6: 3 against Ajla Tomljanovic.
