Is there no return to Melbourne for Andy Murray in 2021?

As various British media unanimously reported on Thursday, the 33-year-old Scot is in quarantine in London. Murray was supposed to arrive in Melbourne this weekend but is now hoping to fly to Australia at a later date.

Actually, the organizers had only allowed tennis professionals from all over the world a three-day window of time until January 17th to travel to Australia on specially chartered flights. A 14-day quarantine is mandatory after arrival. The first Grand Slam tournament of the year starts on February 8th.

Murray passed on Delray Beach

The two-time Olympic champion Murray, who has never won the title in Melbourne despite five finals, had received a wild card as number 123 in the world rankings. For fear of a possible COVID-19 illness, he had recently decided not to travel to the ATP tournament in Delray Beach / Florida because he wanted to "minimize any risk with regard to the Australian Open".

Like Murray, Dominic Thiem's coach Nicolas Massu is also hoping for permission to enter the country later. The coach of the Austrian US Open winner had also tested positive for the corona virus shortly before leaving for Australia on Wednesday.
