Dustin Brown had to play three sets against Hiroki Moriya from Japan, but after a short slack in the second half, the 36-year-old won 6: 2, 2: 6, 6: 1 after 1:28 hours. In the second round in Doha, "Dreddy" will face Spaniard Carlos Taberner, number 22 on the qualifying seed list.

Cedric-Marcel Stebe made it even more exciting. The 30-year-old only prevailed in the champions tie-break of the third set against Thomas Fabbiano (Italy) 6: 1, 4: 6, 7: 6 (3). Fabbiano was already leading 3-0 and 4-1 in the decisive set, but Stebe converted his first match point after 2:45 hours.

Maximilian Marterer needed six minutes longer for his opening win without playing a tiebreak: The number 209 in the world won against Marco Trungelliti 4: 6, 6: 4, 6: 4.

Tobias Kamke lost 5: 7, 3: 6 to the Swiss Henri Laaksonen, who played great last autumn. Mats Moraing made only one game against Mikael Torpegaard (Denmark), losing 1: 6, 0: 6 after 48 minutes.

Antonia Lottner won against the Bulgarian Elitsa Kostova 6: 4, 7: 5 at the start in Dubai and is now playing against Ysaline Bonaventure.

In her match against Ana Konjuh (Croatia) in the second set, Anna-Lena Friedsam fended off three match points at 2: 5 from her point of view, and won this round with 7-5 in the tie-break. In the end, the number four on the seeding list still got the short straw, losing 2: 6, 7: 6 (5), 4: 6.
