Yannick Hanfmann gave everything and Rafael Nadal asked some interesting questions just at the beginning of the second round match at the Australian Open. To which the 20-time Grand Slam champion mostly found an answer. And so Nadal, who had won the title in Melbourne in 2009, finally made it through to the third round with 6: 2, 6: 3 and 6.4.

Hanfmann's fighting spirit, who had made it into the main draw through qualification, was shown again at the very end of the game in the Rod Laver Arena. The former college player fended off Nadal's first two match balls on his own serve, and a third and fourth even as a setback. After a playing time of 2:41 hours, the Spanish grandmaster used his fifth opportunity.

Zverev later against Millman

On Friday, Nadal will meet either Karen Khachanov or Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi.

From a German point of view, it was the third individual defeat of the day: Oscar Otte had previously left the court as a loser against Lorenzo Sonego, as had Dominik Koepfer against Reilly Opelka. Alexander Zverev meets local hero John Millman in the night session.
