While Andrey Rublev may not have taken the top spot in the tableau (which would have been the case had Novak Djokovic's departure been announced prior to the release of the day one schedule), the Russian put on a performance worthy of a co-favourite. After the unchallenged opening win against Gianluca Mager, Rublev didn't stay long with Ricardas Berankis, winning 6:4, 6:2, 6:0.

Rublev went into the tournament without match practice due to a corona infection and had to cancel his participation in the ATP Cup in Sydney. Next opponent will be Marin Cilic. The 2014 US Open champion beat Norbert Gombos in four sets.

The Australian Chris O'Connell caused a surprise. Having entered the tournament with a wild card, the local hero defeated Diego Schwartzman, who was 13th, 7:6/6), 6:4 and 6:4. O'Connell meets Maxime Cressy in round three, who also brought Tomas Machac to his knees after John Isner.
