Samantha Stosur will play her last Australian Open in 2022 - in singles and doubles

The grande dame of Australian women's tennis Samantha Stosur will probably experience her last Grand Slam tournament moments at the Australian Open, which will take place from January 17 to 30, 2022. As the former fourth in the world rankings announced to the Australian daily "The Age", she reckons with a wildcard for the individual competition of the first major event of the year. The 37-year-old is now only listed on position 380 in the WTA ranking. In the interview, she was not sure whether she was planning further tournament appearances after the appearance in "Down under".

Grand Slam victories in singles and doubles

"This will probably be the last time I'll take part, and I want to do well there. I will start in both singles and doubles. I feel like I'm doing enough to be well prepared." , said the 2011 US Open winner in singles. Stosur's last match success in single was at this year's edition of the Australian Open, when she beat wildcard player Destanee Aiava (Australia) 6: 4, 6: 4 in round one.

This was followed by eight first-round defeats, including at Wimbledon, New York and at the Olympic Games in Tokyo. In doubles, Stosur was even more successful in her career, even in the 2021 season that just ended. The woman from Brisbane won both the WTA 1000 event in Cincinnati and the US Open with her partner Zhang Shuai. The long overdue triumph at her home Grand Slam event was won by "Sam" in doubles in 2019, in singles she never made it past the round of 16 in Melbourne.
