One day after number one, number two of the Australian Open 2023 also had to say goodbye. While Rafael Nadal was visibly handicapped by an injury in his defeat against Mackenzie McDonald, Casper Ruud seemed to be in a lost position against Jenson Brooksby. The manner of the 6: 3, 7: 5, 6: 7 (4) and 6: 2 success of the American came as a surprise.

Because Ruud had shown his class at the biggest tournaments last year: He was unable to compete at the Australian Open due to an injury - but the Norwegian was in the finals at Roland Garros and the US Open. Just like at the ATP Finals in Turin. Melbourne 2023 was not worth a trip for Casper Ruud.

Brooksby, on the other hand, showed himself from his best side, played his usual variable tennis - and even occasionally scored with his serve, which many well-meaning observers identify as a weak point. In the end, Brooksby made it exciting: With the score of 5: 3 in the third set, he could not use three match points and lost in the tie-break.

Ruud fails to comeback, Rublev wins

Anyone who thought that the momentum was turning was wrong: Brooksby started the fourth set with two breaks, then gave up his serve and Ruud broke again to make it 4:1. And after almost four hours of play, it was the fifth match point that brought Brooksby what was probably the greatest match success of his career.

Next is Andrey Rublev. The conqueror of Dominic Thiem had to go over four sets against Emil Ruusuvuori, but ultimately won 6: 2, 6: 4, 6: 7 (2) and 6: 3.

On the other hand, Diego Schwartzman had no assignment against JJ Wolf. The Argentine went down 6-1, 6-4 and 6-4. Wolf is thus the possible next opponent of Alexander Zverev. So the German can assert himself against Michael Mmoh.
