The experts agreed on one thing before the start of the Australian Open 2022: Garbine Muguruza, 2020 finalist in Melbourne and winner of the WTA Finals in Guadalajara at the end of last year, will play a key role in the first major of the year. But even experts can be wrong: The Spaniard had to give up in her second match: Muguruza lost surprisingly smoothly to Alizé Cornet 3: 6 and 3: 6.

Anett Kontaveit didn't fare much better, having traveled to Mexico towards the end of last season with a brilliant series for the final of the eight best players. Kontaveit was eliminated 2:6 and 4:6 against the young Dane Clara Tauson.

Iga Swiatek, on the other hand, continues without any problems: The 2020 French Open winner beat Rebecca Peterson from Sweden 6: 2 and 6: 2 and now meets either Daria Kasatkina or Magda Linette.
