As is well known, Maria Sakkari does not lack emotions on the tennis court. What her second-round opponent Diana Shnaider made in Melbourne early Wednesday in extroverted gestures was too much even for the Greek. Which of course also had to do with the course of the match. Because Shnaider tormented Sakkari, especially in the first two sets. In the end, however, the favorite prevailed 3: 6, 7: 5 and 6: 3.

There was significantly less drama with tournament favorite Iga Swiatek, who, in contrast to her 2023 premiere, in which the Pole had to fight Jule Niemeier, made it through to round three without any problems. Swiatek defeated Maria Osorio 6:2 and 6.3.

And Jessica Pegula didn't miss a beat on this rainy day either. The American, who easily won the United Cup against Swiatek, now won 6-2 and 7-6 (5) against Aliaksandra Sasnovich in Melbourne. Only in the end did I have to beat Pegula: after she failed to serve out at 5:4, the favorite won a tight tiebreak.
