Everything was set for a final between the two best doubles pairs according to the WTA world rankings at the Australian Open 2023. And Barbora Krejcikova and Katerina Siniakova, the Czech power duo, beat Marta Kostyuk and Elena 6: 2 and 6: 2 Ruse also confidently ahead. After that, however, there was a small surprise in the Margaret Court Arena: Because Jessica Pegula and Cori Gauff had to surrender to the two Japanese players Shuko Aoyama and Ena Shibahara with 2: 6 and 6: 7 (7).

The first major of the year ended without a title for Gauff and Pegula. In the singles, both Americans had legitimate hopes of winning the title, especially after Iga Swiatek's early elimination against Elena Rybakina. But Gauff, who won the preparatory tournament in Auckland, had to admit defeat to Jelena Ostapenko. Pegula fell victim to Victoria Azarenka in the quarterfinals.

Krejcikova and Siniakova, on the other hand, are now about to defend their titles in Melbourne. The two won three major titles last year, only in Roland Garros it didn't work. However, they were already successful there in 2021. That was the year in which Barbora Krejcikova surprisingly won the individual championship.
