Barty faces her final days as world number one

One day after her retirement, Ashleigh Barty announced that she would have her name removed from the world rankings. This opens up the short-term opportunity for the Pole Iga Swiatek to jump to the top of the ranking for the first time. The 20-year-old only has to win her opening match against Viktorija Golubic at the WTA 1000 event in Miami. Even with a loss, she could only overtake Paula Badosa with a tournament win.

Barty has led the field for more than two years and holds a comfortable lead of 2204 points, but announced her retirement from top-flight tennis on Wednesday.

Barty expects "exciting time for the WTA Tour"

"My name will be removed from the next ranking," said the 25-year-old at a press conference in Brisbane, where she publicly stated for the first time after announcing her retirement: "It will be an exciting time for the WTA Tour with a new number one."

The next world ranking list will be published next Monday after the end of the WTA tournament in Miami. Behind Swiatek (5776 points), French Open winner of 2020, lurk the Greek Maria Sakkari (5085) and the Czech Barbora Krejcikova (5033).
