Bavaria bans indoor tennis after a gym complained

The state government in Bavaria has banned all indoor sports to protect against the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. Indoor tennis courts are also affected. This was preceded by a lawsuit from a fitness studio operator.

"The state government prefers a decision that Bavaria would have proposed anyway at the next Prime Minister's Conference next Monday," said Health Secretary Klaus Holetschek on Thursday. Only school and professional sports are still allowed in the halls.

Initially, however, tennis would still have been allowed. Fitness studios had to close beforehand, which an operator sued with an urgent application to the Bavarian Administrative Court (BayVGH). He saw himself at a disadvantage because other sports facilities for individual sports were still open. The BayVGH then lifted the regulation and the state was forced to take more drastic measures. Since Friday the compulsory closure has been in effect for the whole of November.

"The state government naturally respects the decision of the Bavarian Administrative Court and its reasoning. Protection against infection and the health of our citizens have absolute priority," said Holetschek. It remains to be seen whether this means that the other federal states will follow suit in the coming week. Tennis in the open air is still allowed for the individual subject to the minimum distance.

Apart from professional sport, indoor sport has long been banned in Austria.
