From the start, the German Alexander Zverev showed that he was the quickest to adapt to the tie-break format used. In his preliminary round games in the blue group, he kept a clean slate against both the American Frances Tiafoe and Fabian Marozsan from Hungary and thus qualified for the final. The Austrian Dominic Thiem was also able to win his two games in the red group against Andrey Rublev and Jurij Rodionov and only lost one set against his compatriot.

In the final there was the eagerly awaited re-match from the final of the US Open 2020, which, in contrast to the preliminary round games, was played in “best of five mode”. Zverev started furiously and won the first two sets 5:1 and 5:0, before Thiem fought his way into the match better and better and was able to secure the third round 5:3.
