The Brazilian won the WTA tournament in Birmingham, her opponent in the final, Zhang Shuai, had to give up injured at the score of 5:4 for Haddad Maia.

Both players had already had to play their semi-finals the day before, which fell victim to the rain on Saturday. Zhang Shuai had beaten Sorana Cirstea 4: 6, 6: 1 and 7: 6 (5), Haddad Maia won against Simona Halep 6: 3, 2: 6, 6: 4.

After her victory in the final - or the surrender of Zhang - Haddad Maia addressed moving words to them. "You are a great tennis player and a special person. Tennis is something that passes, but the human side never does, so congratulations for who you are." According to Haddad Maia, Zhang showed that you can be friends on the tour.

The 26-year-old Haddad Maia is on a run of ten wins in a row after winning the tournament in Nottingham last week. And is one of the rising stars of the year anyway: At the beginning of the season she was still in 83rd place, but starting tomorrow she will be in the top 30 for the first time.
