Bianca Andreescu's return to tennis was short-lived. The Canadian, who returned to professional tournaments after a 15-month injury break in Australia, withdrew from the WTA tournament in Adelaide at short notice.

The reason given by the 2019 US Open winner was an injury to her left leg. The first round at the Australian Open was Andreescu's first match since the 2019 WTA Finals in Shenzhen, where she retired with a meniscus tear.

The 20-year-old had to go into tough quarantine after arriving in Melbourne and lost to Su-wei Hsieh in the second round. At the Philipp Island Trophy in the second tournament week of the Australian Open she reached the semi-finals, where she lost to Marie Bouzkova after two match points were awarded in three sets.

"After my return after 15 months and long, tough matches, I have a problem with my legs," Andreescu said in a broadcast. "I'm already thinking about the rest of the season so I have to cancel for Adelaide."

Andreescu has called for the tournaments in Doha and Dubai in March.
