The President of the Italian Tennis Federation, Angelo Binaghi, was optimistic that the Italian Open for women and men could be held "between mid and late September". The tournament was originally scheduled to start on May 11, but had to be postponed due to the corona pandemic.

The French Open in Paris had been postponed by the organizers due to the pandemic until September 20, which had caused clear criticism. After the rescheduling of the cycling classic Tour de France, which would overlap with the Grand Slam tournament, there were considerations to postpone the event in Roland Garros by another week. Also because otherwise it would only be a week break between the US Open. But this is not officially yet. The US Open want to make a decision in mid-June whether, when and where to play. The further tournament planning of the ATP and WTA probably also depends on this.

The tournament in Rome is usually one of the most important preparation tournaments for the French Open, alongside the clay court events in Monte Carlo and Barcelona.
