Dominic Thiem has announced the timetable for his comeback

Dominic Thiem's comeback plan is slowly but surely taking shape. The Austrian, who will play the first tournament after a nine-month injury break at the Challenger event in Marbella, which starts on Monday, plans to travel to Marrakech after the start in Spain to take part in an ATP 250 event there. The APA reported on Sunday.

After Marrakech, Thiem will therefore start at the ATP Masters 1000 event in Monte Carlo. The Austrian last served in the Principality in 2019, back then in the third round against the Serb Dusan Lajovic. In general, the Masters event in Monte Carlo has not been a good place for the 28-year-old in the past, and reaching the quarter-finals should have been the highest of feelings for Thiem so far.

Thiem slips in the ranking

After Monte Carlo, the Lower Austrian probably thought of starting at the ATP 250 event in Belgrade (from April 18, 2022), which Thiem is giving preference to Barcelona this year. The field in Belgrade is expected to be led by world number one Novak Djokovic. After that, appearances in Madrid and Rome seem likely before the French Open is the first big highlight for the Lichtenwörther. Thiem last failed in Paris in 2021 in round one.

Due to his month-long injury break, Thiem has also lost a lot of ground in the world rankings. The Austrian is currently only in 50th place, the 28-year-old's personal best is third. On his return to the Challenger Tour in Marbella, the 2022 US Open champion meets Pedro Cachin from Argentina in round one. Stan Wawrinka is also celebrating his comeback in Spain after months of absence.
