Emma Raducanu knighted by King Charles III

Emma Raducanu, 2021 US Open champion, was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire by King Charles III on Tuesday.

With her sensational run to the US Open title last fall, Emma Raducanu apparently not only captivated British tennis fans. But also the royal house. Because yesterday, Tuesday, the 20-year-old received an order from the newly crowned King Charles III, which now identifies her as a Member of the Order of the British Empire.

So Raducanu is now an MBE. Since 1917, this award has been given to people who have rendered outstanding services to the British Empire - apart from military honours. Rather, special achievements in art, sport or science are to be honoured.

Andy Murray even took it a notch a few years ago when a two-time Olympic gold medalist and three-time Major Champion was promoted to the rank of Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE). The OBE is the second highest award in the British monarchy after the CBE, with the MBA one step below.
