The young Tyrolean caused a sensation in the Wiener Stadthalle, caught Pospisil on the wrong foot with his powerful game and good serves and surprisingly got the first round. Dominic Thiem, the defending champion at the Erste Bank Open, also noticed this and looked his compatriot on the ground in sets two and three.

But that shouldn't bring Erler much luck, the Austrian hit a double fault at the worst possible time in the second round, conceded the break and had to watch as Vasek Pospisil kept improving. The Canadian now had an impressive service rate, beat ace for ace. As a result, Alexander Erler saw little land and had to give up set two with 3: 6.

All Austrians failed

In the third round, Pospisil continued his strong form from the second set, broke Erler in the first game and now played really good tennis in phases. Another break to 3-0 should bring the preliminary decision - the resistance of the Tyrolean was now broken. Round three also went 6-2 to Vasek Pospisil, who is now playing for a place in the main draw on Sunday tomorrow.

So all three Austrian starters failed on Saturday. In the second match of the day, Lucas Miedler was able to stand up to Italian Lorenzo Sonego at times, but still had to admit defeat in two sets. S chlechter ran it for David Pichler, who came against the Slovenians Aljaz Bedene vigorously under the wheels. Jurij Rodionov, Dennis Novak (each wildcard) and Dominic Thiem are firmly in the main field.
