Cristian Garin meets Dominic Thiem in the second round

Shortly after Dominic Thiem had finished his first round match at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna, Cristian Garin and Stan Wawrinka entered the Center Court in the Austrian capital. The upcoming opponent of the defending champion from Lichtenwörth should be determined in this match.

Garin got off to a strong start and took Wawrinka's serve early on - this break was enough for the 22nd world ranking to bag the first set. In the second round, "Stan the man" initially missed three set balls at 5: 4, but in the tiebreak the Swiss then prevailed 11: 9 and sent the match into a decisive third set.

In this Garin managed an early break again. And as in section one, that was enough for the 24-year-old to win the set and thus the match. 6: 4, 6: 7 (9) and 6: 3 was the final score from the South American's point of view - on Thursday Garin will meet local hero Dominic Thiem.

A few hours earlier, Grigor Dimitrov had asserted himself in a highly anticipated game in two close rounds against Karen Khachanov. In addition to Thiem and Djokovic, Hubert Hurkacz, Lorenzo Sonego and Dan Evans also bought their ticket for the second round.
