At the start of this year's ATP 250 tournament in Kitzbühel, Dennis Novak had to admit defeat to the Italian Gianluca Mager with 4: 6 and 0: 6, at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna the Austrian number two took a 7: 6 (4 ) and 7: 6 (4) success but now successful revenge.

In the first round there was only one break chance, which Novak knew how to fend off right at the beginning of the match. The world number 116 presented itself in the tiebreaker. then a track more stable, especially with the return, the set gain was the logical consequence.

The spectators in the Wiener Stadthalle also got to see a very serve-heavy match in the second section, Novak only had to fend off the first two breakballs when the score was 5: 5. For his part, the 28-year-old never got a single opportunity to take the serve from Mager, but Novak was also the slightly better player in the second tie-break. After exactly 100 minutes of playing time - thanks to a double error by Mager - he used his second match point to win 7: 6 (4) and 7: 6 (4).

Novak thus ensured a perfect end from an Austrian point of view at the Erste Bank Open on the national holiday. In the second round, the Lower Austrian will face Jannik Sinner or Reilly Opelka on Thursday.
