New opponent, new level of concentration: While Dominic Thiem made a false start against Tommy Paul with two double mistakes in the first game, he did not grant Daniil Medvedev any start-up financing in the second match on Thursday on Center Court in the Wiener Stadthalle. Thiem started dominantly as the server, supported by the audience, which this time had already reached operating temperature when the very first point was won. That was also urgently needed against a man like Medvedev. As is well known, the Russian does not distribute any gifts himself, is perhaps not as creative as Paul on the offensive, but as unpleasant as a defender as only Novak Djokovic or Rafael Nadal is otherwise. Or Dominic Thiem.

From the local hero's point of view, it became critical for the first time in the seventh game, when Thiem was initially able to fend off three breakballs from his successor as US Open champion. With the fourth chance, it was actually a double fault that gave Thiem the first deficit of the game.

Medvedev does not let up after winning the set

A few moments later, Thiem had the chance to make an immediate comeback - thanks to a double from Medvedev. But the Russian kept his nerve and confirmed the lead he had just fought hard for. And secured the 6:3 with another break.

Medvedev didn't give up in the sixth match between the two and created a promising position with the break to make it 3-1. The favorite distributed the balls cleverly, letting Thiem dart back and forth along the baseline. Dominic Thiemm had to take a lot of risks for his points in this phase, Medvedev's defense remained stable. And not only that: With his serve, the 26-year-old from Moscow, who was only able to win the tournament in Los Cabos in the current season, got those easy points that Thiem didn't get.

After 90 minutes of play, Medvedev was only missing two points on serve Thiem to reach the quarter-finals, but seven minutes later it was time.
