Despite the impending cancellation of the premiere, the future of the grass tournament in Berlin should not be endangered. "We are extremely lucky that we have found a great main sponsor in bett1.de. These are two young men who said: We are planning for the long term, we stand by it, even if the misfortune should happen that Berlin 2020 does not take place," tournament director Barbara Rittner told SID.

Due to the spreading corona virus, the tennis tours WTA and ATP have stopped playing until June 7th, the Grass Court Championships at the LTTC Rot-Weiß take place from June 13th to 21st at Hundehehle in Berlin. Three grass pitches have been built, the budget for the first edition is four million euros. The Grand Slam winners Angelique Kerber and Sofia Kenin and "Wunderkind" Cori Gauff agreed.

Only takes place "when it is your responsibility"

"Of course we are all really looking forward to the tournament, but that is moving into the background. At the moment we are still on the plan, I also hope that it will take place, but only if it is also responsible," said Rittner and added: "I am glad that we will not be one of the tournaments where existence is on the brink."

The tournament in Berlin is exactly one week after the date that the ATP and WTA tours have announced as the end of the interruption of professional tennis. After the European clay court tour was canceled with the ATP Masters 1000 event in Monte Carlo and the ATP and WTA events in Madrid and Rome, among other things, and the French Open announced a postponement to September, the corona virus is said to have caused it Break until June 7th . But even if the interruption is extended, you obviously don't have to worry too much about the tournament in Berlin.
