The 36-year-old Augsburg lost against number 20 seeded Chilean Cristian Garin 4: 6, 6: 4, 1: 6, 6: 4. After almost three hours of play, Garin converted his first match point when a return from Kohlschreiber landed behind the baseline.

In the drizzle and on an almost soggy outdoor court, Kohlschreiber initially had problems finding the match. Garin, one of the best clay court players on the tour with a 14: 3 record this year, took advantage of a double mistake by his opponent for the first set ball. In the second half, Kohlschreiber offered more resistance, an early break was enough to equalize the set.

Then the German completely lost the thread, only a successful service game to 1: 5 saved him from the maximum penalty in the third set. When the rain kept increasing, Kohlschreiber was in the lead with a break in the fourth round, but with his own mistakes and visibly annoyed by the weather, he brought Garin back into the game.

On Sunday and Alexander Zverev, Jan-Lennard Struff and Daniel Altmaier, three men from the DTB squad celebrated their entry into the second round.
