French Open: Amélie Mauresmo is the new tournament director

The former world number one Amélie Mauresmo is the new tournament director of Roland Garros. The French tennis association has now announced this.

Mauresmo succeeds Guy Forget. Its expiring contract was not extended, allegedly at its own request.

With Mauresmo, this is the first time that a woman is at the helm of the most important tennis tournament in France. /

"I am very proud to join the Roland-Garros team. I accepted the role of tournament director with clear ambitions. I will fill it with the same high standards, freedoms and the same passion that have always driven me," she is quoted as saying .

Amélie Mauresmo: Great career as a player and coach

Mauresmo has had an impressive career both as a player and as a coach: The now 42-year-old made it to the top of the WTA world rankings in 2004, and stayed at the top for 39 weeks. In 2006 she won the Australian Open and Wimbledon. In 2009 she resigned as an active player.

After the end of her career, she took over the French Fed Cup team in 2012, and between 2014 and 2016 she coached Andy Murray. She was also proposed as team leader of the French Davis Cup team, but did not take this job.

Post in Paris-Bercy apparently still open

Who will take over the tournament management of the Masters tournament in Paris-Bercy, however, still seems to be open. Forget had last held both posts.

Forget was recently the focus of investigations around the Panama Papers , it is speculated that he has given up his duties in Roland Garros and Paris-Bercy as a result or has had to give up.
