French Open hope to host with spectators

According to the wishes of the French tennis association president, the French Open should take place with "a maximum" of possible audiences despite the coronavirus crisis. Ultimately, however, the government decides, said Bernard Giudicelli in a video call with the French tennis professional Gael Monfils.

He declined the option to host the Grand Slam clay court tournament in Paris as a ghost tournament without spectators. "The French Open, like all major tournaments, is a meeting between the players and the audience. That is the magic of this tournament," said Giudicelli.

He also hoped that the tournament could be organized to a limited extent by implementing protective measures such as keeping a distance.

The organizers of the French Open had arbitrarily postponed the Grand Slam tournament, which was originally scheduled for May 24 to June 7, to the end of September and received plenty of criticism. The fans have received their entrance fee back for tickets they have bought.

The organizers of the US Open still hope to be able to host their tournament in New York from August 31 to September 10 as planned. Wimbledon has been canceled for this year. The Australian Open earlier this year had been scheduled.
