6: 2, 3: 6, 7: 5, 5: 7, 7: 5 it was Dominic Thiem after a playing time of four hours and 13 minutes. In his view, the 25-year-old had not been put off by the third interruption of rain in Paris at 4: 1, which lasted for around an hour, in the fifth set. The 13-time ATP tournament winner was initially unable to use his second breakball against Djokovic and subsequently also lost his own service game to 4: 3.

After the Austrian had taken his service from the Serb again, Thiem then awarded two consecutive match balls and shortly afterwards lost his service again to 5: 4. Djokovic then shortened it to 5: 5, before Thiem brought his service through and used his third match ball for 7: 5 in the decisive set on the Philipp-Chatrier court to 7: 5 in the following service game from Djokovic. It was Thiem's third victory in the ninth encounter of the two.

The fourth place in the world rankings is tomorrow's Sunday against Rafael Nadal (ATP 2), who prevailed in three sets against Roger Federer in three sets in the semifinals. Thiem has won four times in twelve duels against the Spaniard.

Most recently, he defeated the Spanish clay court specialist in his tournament victory at the ATP Tour 500 tournament in Barcelona. In the semi-finals in Barcelona six weeks ago, Thiem had won 6: 4, 6: 4 against Nadal.
