Monfils pulled out of his round of 16 match against Jack Draper in Montreal last week due to a foot injury. It was his first tournament in three months. Before that, Günter Bresnik's protégé wanted to make his comeback in Kitzbühel, but nothing came of it.

Monfils had started the year well by winning the tournament in Adelaide, in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open the veteran failed in five sets against Matteo Berrettini. He then reached the round of 16 in Indian Wells (loss to Carlos Alcaraz) and the second round in Miami, where Monfils lost to Francisco Cerundolo. The 35-year-old played the last match before his long injury break in Madrid against Novak Djokovic.

At the US Open 2021, Monfils had an exciting match against Jannik Sinner, almost a 0: 2 set deficit. Monfils delivered his best result at the last major of the year in 2016. At that time he reached the semi-finals. But then it was eliminated against Novak Djokovic, once again, without a chance.
