Sock, currently only ranked 128th, needed a while before he was able to get his dreaded forehand past Ruud on the slow surface. He was quickly behind with a break and ultimately couldn't get close in the first set. In the second round, Ruud was closer to the break for a long time, but Sock managed it in the end.

The American took the momentum into the match tiebreak, where he quickly took a 3-0 lead, but then gave up six points in a row. Sock managed to catch up again, but in the end it wasn't enough to surprise.

"It was back and forth," said Ruud - he didn't take his chances in the second set. "But I'm very happy to have helped Team Europe get off to a good start."

Federer/Nadal play in the late evening

Stefanos Tsitsipas, who meets Diego Schwartzman, is right at the start.

In the evening, from 8 p.m. CEST, Andy Murray will play against Alex de Minaur. This is followed by the doubles between Roger Federer/Rafael Nadal and Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe.
