Three titles in the last four tournaments, a new career high with 23rd place: Yes, Liudmila Samsonova is currently doing a lot. Just last week, the young Russian won her fourth career title at the WTA 500 event in Tokyo - a promising form curve for the 2022 season finish.

A significant part of that is because the 23-year-old is now able to get a better grip on the mental component: "I think the mental part was the part I had more trouble with, on the same thing every week level to play," explained the Russian on the sidelines of the US Open.

Coach and mental component as key

After the triumph in Tokyo, the world number 23 said. but, she would have known at all times what was happening on court. "I don't get nervous. I'm always very calm and try to understand what's happening on the pitch and what the solution is so I can play better," the 23-year-old explained to the WTA.

In Tokyo, she would have shown perfect mental performance, never thinking about the score or results, just about playing through her game. "That was very important for me. I was in the final today, but in my head I played the first round. It was fantastic," said the world number 23.

Coach Danilo Pizzorno has at least as important a part in the current high as Samsonova emphasizes: "I think Danilo is a genius, a tactical genius. Seriously. It's not because he works with me. I think that there is nobody in the WTA who has as much experience and can coach as well as he does."
