"Maybe my last Laver Cup": Nick Kyrgios is leaving - and ends his season prematurely

Nick Kyrgios is apparently already on his way home after two appearances at the Laver Cup in 2021 - also because his mother is not doing well.

Usually the Laver Cup is one of those events Nick Kyrgios thrives on - as a team. This was not the case this year. In the singles against Stefanos Tsitsipas he had no chance at all for a long time, especially not when the Greek served, but in the end he left a few chances to get ahead. The double at John Isner's side was also lost afterwards. /

It is not surprising, however. Kyrgios has hardly played since the beginning of the corona pandemic: After his appearance in Acapulco in February, he skipped the 2020 season entirely and in any case said he would not be happy to continue traveling and continue playing the rest of the tour in view of the circumstances. In 2021 he was on the pitch in seven tournaments, if only briefly: only at the Australian Open and Wimbledon did it go through to the third round, otherwise he lost early, most recently four times in a row at the start. Kyrgios also repeatedly let through thoughts of resignation.

As is now the case with the Laver Cup. "I'm not going to say it's my last Laver Cup, but I don't know how much longer I'll be out in tennis," he said. Later he waved around, "I don't want to say anything wrong, but it may be the last year I'll play the Laver Cup."

Kyrgios: "My mother's health is not good"

Kyrgios will no longer compete on Sunday either, he has allegedly already left. "I have to go home," he said on Saturday, "I traveled four and a half months and my mother's health is not good."

How long Kyrgios will continue in general seems open - however, we will not see any further appearances by him in 2021. Kyrgios had already canceled the Masters tournament in Indian Wells a few days ago, and in general he will not play any more tournaments this year, he said. "Anything left now is a bonus."

In the ATP world rankings, Kyrgios has slipped to 95th place.
