The very first match ball was set for Dustin Brown: reason enough for the current number 170 in the world to pull his hat in his face. Alexander Zverev, on the other hand, could only congratulate his conqueror fairly on his victory. And after 4: 6, 7: 6 (3) and 3: 6 had to break off his tents at the MercedesCup 2019 in Stuttgart after exactly two hours of play.

Just in time for the start of the game, coach Ivan Lendl and Olya Sharypova, Zverev's very good acquaintance, had taken their place, from whom he had actually separated before the tournament in Munich. The two observers saw an inconsistent service performance by the German number one: Zverev made 14 double mistakes, with at least 21 aces.

Brown, on the other hand, had played through qualification and defeated John Millman on lap one. He was very happy that he would have kept his nerves in the end, the winner said after the match in an interview with Sky. In the quarterfinals on Friday, Dustin Brown faces the winner of the game between Gilles Simon or Félix Auger-Aliassime. In addition to Brown, Jan-Lennard Struff is also in the top eight from a German perspective. Struff now plays against Lucas Pouille, the 2017 Stuttgart winner.
