Reserved is probably not an adjective that is often used in connection with the name Nick Kyrgios. The Australian acts too rebelliously on the pitch, and the man from Canberra rarely minces his words away from it. Whatever Nick Kyrgios is thinking will sooner or later find its way into the media.
And so, in the run-up to the Australian Open, the 27-year-old makes no secret of the fact that he will feel particularly pressured in the coming days: "People will never understand the pressure I am under at this time of year," said Kyrgios at CODE Sports. "It's hard to get going. When I'm feeling good, I know I can go out there and play good tennis."
All-clear in case of injury
The world number 22 is currently laboring. an ankle injury that made it impossible to compete in two preparatory tournaments for Kyrgios in the run-up to the Australian Open. However, this did not hinder the 27-year-old in any way, so physical complaints will hardly play a role in Melbourne in a few days.
A man who will very well play a role at the Australian Open, on the other hand, is Novak Djokovic, with whom Kyrgios seems to have warmed up much better recently: "We had our differences in the past. What happened to him a year ago was difficult to watch. Mine I don't think he was treated fairly so I made my point," said the Australian. "I think we're at the beginning of a good relationship." Kyrgios could well imagine an exhibition match with the series winner - for example in the run-up to the Australian Open. Maybe also to take some pressure off.
