Words of praise for Iga Swiatek: Karolina Pliskova

World number one Iga Swiatek continues to make her mark this season. Track number five followed in Rome . Against seeded opponents she has a record of 15:2 this year! The Pole's recent dominance cements her position as the best player in the world.

Karolina Pliskova knows all too well what it's like to lose to Swiatek. At the 1000 tournament in Rome, the Czech was beaten by the 20-year-old in 2021 - and how. She lost the final 6-0 and 6-0 - the only time in her career that she failed to win a single game. She is not at all surprised by the current Swiatek dominance.

"I'm not surprised at all. She just has that safe game. There are players, such as Madison Keys, who can play fantastically, but these players keep dropping out. Iga just doesn't have these games. Of course she can still play better, but she makes very few slight mistakes. I find that she moves very well, especially on sand – she actually has no weaknesses. And now the self-confidence is added to that.”

Pliskova: "Wrist is fine"

So while things are going great at Swiatek, things are going rather modestly at Pliskova itself. After missing the start of the year with a hand injury, she returned to Indian Wells but had only moderate success. She suffered her last defeat in the second round in Rome against the Swiss Jil Teichmann. However, the 30-year-old has a few points to defend in the second half of the year - she was in the final of Wimbledon and the quarter-finals of the US Open.

"I feel happy. The main thing is that my wrist is fine. I think that kind of vibe can help me in the second half of the year.”
