Despite the lack of a corona vaccination, Novak Djokovic still hopes to compete at the US Open, which begins on August 29th. "I'm preparing as if I could compete while waiting to see if I can travel to the US," the longtime world number one wrote on social media on Saturday.

Vaccination against the corona virus is currently mandatory in order to be allowed to enter the USA. The organizers of the US Open had recently emphasized that they wanted to comply with the government's guidelines - there is a big question mark behind Djokovic's appearance in New York.

Djokovic had already missed the Australian Open after a long back and forth at the beginning of the year and now threatens not to be able to compete in the last Grand Slam tournament of the year either. The 35-year-old recently declared at Wimbledon that he would not want to be vaccinated in the future either.

Djokovic, who also thanked his fans for the support in his statement, currently holds 21 Grand Slam titles and is only one tournament win behind Rafael Nadal in the all-time list of the best. The Mallorcan is also currently preparing intensively for the US Open in New York .
