Novak Djokovic prefers sand preparation to US Open start

It has not yet been decided whether the US Open 2020 will take place at all. Based on the protective measures under discussion against the spread of the corona virus, industry leader Novak Djokovic has little desire to start in New York City anyway.

Since Wednesday morning it has been clear that Roger Federer will not take part in the US Open 2020, the Swiss takes the entire second half of the tennis year off after a second knee operation. Now Federer won his last title in New York in 2008, his most recent final dates from 2015. Last year, the Swiss eliminated Grigor Dimitrov in the quarter-finals - so it is not wrong to say that Federer is not among the top top Favorites.

The situation was very different for Rafael Nadal, who would travel to the National Tennis Center in the Queens district as defending champion. The subjunctive is appropriate - because Nadal feels very little desire to serve under the expected major restrictions on freedom of movement.

For Djokovic, the season starts on sand

Remain from the Big Three Novak Djokovic. But he has already announced that a stay of several weeks in a hotel near the airport does not exude the charm that he expects from a Grand Slam tournament. In an interview with the Serbian TV station RTS, Djokovic went one step further.

"Most of the players I spoke to were very negative about competing there," said Djokovic. “For me, the season, as things are going, will continue the ashes season in early September.

Djokovic will be back in Belgrade this weekend for the first time since the start of the Corona break at the Adria Cup he launched - with Dominic Thiem and Alexander Zverev among others. In the current, although interrupted tennis year, Novak Djokovic played 18 games - and all won.

The decision whether and under what circumstances the US Open will be held should be made next week.
