There was no need to worry about the targeted preparation for the Australian Open for Austria's number one Dominic Thiem : Like all other professional and squad players, Austria's number one was allowed to train in the hall during the lockdown. And left for Melbourne a few days ago, where he was in the final of the season's first major last year. For the hobby player, however, it still means waiting.

Magnus Brunner, who has been president of the Austrian Tennis Association (ÖTV) for a few months, has now urged the Kurier to end this situation as soon as possible. It seems clear that this will not be possible before February 8, 2021. "The developments up to then will show when, in addition to everyday work and school life, indoor sports facilities can open up again," says Brunner. After all, Vice Chancellor and Sports Minister Walter Kogler (Greens) declared at the beginning of the year that tennis was in a comparatively good position to be able to resume.

Which does not help the hall operators, who have to complain about high sales losses, at the moment. Which is why Brunner in the courier interview also called for a fixed cost subsidy or a failure bonus that should cover up to 90 percent of the losses.
