The glamorous tennis party was not: When the long-awaited return to the grass after the corona break, the German quartet said goodbye early in the Steffi Graf stadium in Berlin. Jan-Lennard Struff , Tommy Haas and Andrea Petkovic failed in the quarter-finals with only moderate attendance, Julia Görges had to give up after an injury.

"The match was decent. It is a shame that I lost, of course," said Struff after his defeat. The German number two from Warstein lost to the Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut with 3: 6, 6: 3 and 7:10 and can now prepare for the second tournament in Berlin, which starts on Friday in Hangar 6 of the former Tempelhof airport on hard court is carried out.

Returnee Haas (42) lost out in 4: 6, 6: 3 and 8:10 against only 18-year-old top talent Jannik Sinner (Italy). Haas kept up particularly well in the second set. "I'm already very satisfied. I can already feel my legs a lot," said the oldie.

Görges has to give up against Sevastova

It was even worse for Görges. The world rankings-38. from Bad Oldesloe had to break off their quarter-finals against Anastasija Sevastova (Latvia) at a score of 3: 6 and 3: 4 due to an ankle injury in front of around 300 spectators (800 should have come).

"I knelt at the return. It felt like I had stepped out of the void," said Goerges about her injury to the right ankle. Petkovic lost to two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova 4: 6 and 1: 6.
