Federer confirmed in the French part of the press conference that he would play "on clay" again this season. A start at the French Open at the end of May is planned. The world rankings did not explicitly name other tournaments on ashes in which he will participate.

Most recently, Federer participated in the Roland Garros event in 2015 and was eliminated in the quarter-finals. The Swiss won his only title in Paris in 2009.

In the past few years Federer had not started on his weakest surface in order to save energy and to be able to prepare for the following lawn season.

The 37-year-old defended his title in the quarter-finals of Melbourne on Sunday with a 7: 6 (13:11), 6: 7 (3: 7), 5: 7, 6: 7 (5: 7) against him 14th placed Greek missed Tsitsipas.
